Face Moisturizer for Oily Skin—What to Look for on the Label

man applying facial lotion

As a guy with oily skin, you’re probably no stranger to regular acne breakouts and constant shine on your forehead. The last thing you want is a moisturizer that makes these problems even worse.

Not all moisturizers are bad for oily skin. In fact, the opposite is true. The best moisturizer for oily skin will perform triple duty by helping control oil production, protecting skin from UV rays and preventing fine lines and wrinkles from showing up too early.

To find the ideal moisturizer, you may need to do a little research. Don’t worry, it’s nothing too exhausting. To make the process easier on you, we’ve rounded up some things you should look for in a moisturizer for oily skin.

Before we get into it, here are three things you need to know about moisturizers for oily skin:

  1. Skipping your daily moisturizer can increase your skin’s oil production and make oily skin worse.
  2. The best moisturizers for oily skin will contain hydrating oils that won’t clog the pores of your skin.
  3. A daily moisturizer with SPF will moisturize and protect your skin from UV damage.

Non-Comedogenic Oils

Examples: Lavandula Oil, Rosemary Leaf Oil, Grapeseed Oil

Oils to Avoid: Coconut Oil, Mineral Oil, Sunflower Oil

Oils are the base component to any good moisturizer. However, some oils have a tendency to clog pores more than others.

Oils that are known to clog pores are called “comedogenic,” while oils that don’t clog pores are considered “non-comedogenic.” Some guys with dry/normal skin may be able to get away with a mildly comedogenic oil in their moisturizer. For those with oily skin, the comedogenic oils in their skin care products can cause severe acne breakouts.

As you search for the right moisturizer, look for noncomedogenic oils such as Jojoba Oil, Lavandula Oil and Rosemary Leaf Oil. Rosemary Leaf Oil in particular can be beneficial to oily skin types struggling with inflammation and acne breakouts.

According to a 2018 review published in Future Science OA, Rosemary Leaf Oil belongs to the Lamiaceae family, a series of plants which are widely known for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties (see claim: “The Lamiaceae family includes species of plants…which have antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.”)

Hydrating Ingredients

Examples: Glycerin, Dimethicone, Hyaluronic Acid

Greasy Ingredients to Avoid: Cocoa Butter, Lanolin, Petrolatum

For some reason, society has led guys to believe that hydrating their skin isn’t necessary. This is far from the case, even for guys with oily skin. In fact, oily skin types can benefit from a daily moisturizer in more ways than one.

Seeking out hydrating ingredients such as Glycerin, Dimethicone and Hyaluronic Acid can draw moisture to the skin without clogging pores, helping to restore balance to your skin’s oil production. When your skin is properly hydrated, it doesn’t go crazy producing excess oil that clogs pores and causes acne breakouts.

Oily skin types who have recent acne scars can also benefit by using a nourishing moisturizer. According to a 2016 study published in the Journal of Wound Care, balancing the skin’s hydration levels plays an important role in the skin’s healing process (see claim: “The discovery that a moist environment actively supports the healing response when compared with a dry environment highlights the importance of water and good hydration levels for optimal healing.”)

SPF

Recommended: SPF 20 or Higher

There is no getting around the importance of wearing sunscreen. According to a 2014 study published in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health, between 89 to 95 percent of annual melanoma cases are the result of UV exposure.

The study goes on to say that an even higher percentage of squamous cell carcinomas and basal cell carcinomas are caused by excessive UV exposure (see claim: “Between 89 and 95% of the annual CM cases, around 99.8% SCC and 99.4% BCC cases are caused by solar UV exposure.”)

Despite repeated warnings to wear sunscreen, guys with oily skin may be tempted to skip the sunscreen due to its pore-clogging tendencies. A simple way to get around this problem is by opting for a daily moisturizer with SPF.

Unlike regular sunscreen, a moisturizer is formulated to be light and non-greasy on your face. To top off its hydrating and skin-protecting benefits, some SPF moisturizers, including the Tiege Hanley AM Moisturizer, contain soothing ingredients such as Plantain Extract and Lavendula Oil, which can promote healing and fight off acne-causing bacteria, respectively.

Final Thoughts

If you’re struggling to control the shine on your face, a light, non-greasy moisturizer for oily skin may be exactly what your skin care routine is missing. A good moisturizer can provide much-needed protection from the elements while restoring your skin’s natural oil balance.
